onslow family support

The Onslow Family Support Program is aimed at Aboriginal families in Onslow and the Bindi Bindi community with the primary focus of improving school attendance and capacity in parents and caregivers.

Local mentors work with the community and local services to provide support  to overcome any barriers that may prevent children from regular school attendance. Intensive mentoring is provided to families and covers support for establishing routines, school pick-ups, dealing with departmental agencies, paperwork and medical issues.

As part of the overall program, subsidiary delivery programs of Waalitj Kids and Deadly Sista Girlz were introduced in partnership with Onslow School to provide tailored mentoring.

Waalitj Kids focuses on providing engaging and educational mentoring support for primary school aged children. Mentors work with families to encourage children to attend school through facilitating morning pick-ups, access to a healthy breakfast, sports, education activities and rewards.

Deadly Sista Girlz (DSG) is a culturally appropriate healthy lifestyles program designed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls, which focuses on improving engagement and school attendance through mentoring sessions. DSG covers topics including building self-esteem and confidence, building pride in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander identity and education and information provision around topics such as sexual and women’s health, drug and alcohol abuse, road safety, nutrition, financial literacy and healthy relationships.
