Driver Training Program

Our Driver Training program based in Bunbury provides end to end culturally appropriate support facilitated by an Indigenous mentor that guides participants through the process of gaining their license and then finding suitable employment.

This program is supported by the Department of Employment, Skills and Education as part of the Local Jobs Program.

The Driver Training program works with up to 20 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants residing
in the South-West region of WA to achieve their provisional Driver’s License. As part of the program
participants are supported into employment, this may include part-time employment prior to attaining a
license however sustainable full-time employment will be prioritised. Our full-time Program Coordinator
is responsible for coordinating and mentoring participants across a hybrid of Driving School lessons,
supervised hours and where possible supporting family members or existing volunteer staffed service
RYDE to supervise hours for participants.

The lack of a valid driver’s license creates a major barrier to employment for Indigenous job seekers, this is a particularly prevalent issue for young people. With the mission of empowering First Nations Australians to find sustainable employment, launching this program was an important step in providing a wrap around service for job seekers.
